SJPD investigates building collapse at Tenth, Patee streets

The St. Joseph Police Department is investigating a building collapse on the corner of 10th and Patee streets that happened on Monday evening, Jan. 27.
Assistant Fire Chief, Jamey McVicker told News-Press NOW on Tuesday, Jan. 28, the protocol for when they first arrived on the scene.
“We had a regular response, which is about five different, fire companies that responded to that,” McVicker said. “Upon arrival, the first thing they wanted to make sure is scene safety and that any residents that might have been in the building were okay.”
SJFD Battalion Chief Paris Jenkins said the top priority was getting 11 people temporary shelter through the Red Cross on Monday.
Red Cross made it to the scene and spoke with residents.
On Monday evening, resident Tyler Heinz shared the initial experience when the building collapse happened stating “the foundation was probably ruined” and he wouldn’t enter the home at that time. On Tuesday, Heinz and his family were up at 7:30 a.m., gathering their belongings to stay with family friends.
“I mean, just everybody’s out of their houses and there’s nothing,” Heinz said. “No body planned for this because you know...not something you plan for. They won’t let my two neighbors come into their houses at all. We’re just cleaning our stuff and trying to just get out.”
Officials are warning residents to avoid the area until further notice, demonstrating the off-limits area with caution tape and additional metal fencing.
