See St. Joseph: Intergalactic battles, brunch and classical music

The St. Joseph Symphony is bringing back their Symphony Minis series with Lory Lacy and her ensemble including Rob Patterson, Dana Wollard and Jiwon Choi.

Whether you're looking to enjoy a feast for brunch or learn how to fight off Sith Lords, there's something for everyone in this week's edition of See St. Joseph.

What better way to kick off the weekend than with waffles, lattes and a charcuterie table? Hazel’s Coffee Downtown, 310 N. Third St., is pulling out all the stops for its first brunch of 2025. Hazel’s and Graceful Planning teamed up to create the perfect brunch setup. Whether you like chicken and waffles, donuts or hash brown casserole, there will be something appetizing for everyone. Brunch goes from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Hazel’s Downtown. Tickets are limited and going quickly, so those interested should make a reservation online at hazelscoffeeco.square.site.

The Saint Joseph Symphony is bringing back its Symphony Minis series starting Sunday, Jan. 26, at Ashland United Methodist Church, 2711 Ashland Ave. Kicking off the 2025 season, the symphony’s principal flute player, Lory Lacy, will lead an ensemble including Rob Patterson on the violin, Dana Wollard on the cello and Jiwon Choi on the piano. The performance will feature the world premiere of an original composition written by Lacy and flute solos written for her by Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez during her time at the Peabody Conservatory. The first Symphony Mini of the season will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $30 for adults and can be purchased online at saintjosephsymphony.org.

The Saber Arts Club is inviting St. Joseph residents to live out their childhood dreams of participating in a lightsaber battle. This is the first of several training sessions for the Saber Arts Club. Get the proper training to learn how to battle with the universe's ultimate weapon. The introductory course will go over the basics, Shii-Cho forms and partner drills. Everyone 13 and up is welcome, with those under 18 needing to have a parent in attendance. The introductory course will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, at Zion United Church of Christ, 816 Faraon St.
