A patient at Fulton State Hospital has been detained on charges of first-degree murder and fourth-degree assault following an assault at the hospital on Monday, according to the Fulton Police Department.

Jabril Kanatzar, 29, is being held without bond in a secure facility, Fulton police say.

Kanatzar allegedly assaulted another patient, identified as 53-year-old Christos Karagiannis, just before 6 p.m. Monday, police say. Karagiannis died from injuries sustained in the attack on Wednesday after he was taken off life support, police say.

Fulton police were notified of the attack at 3:49 p.m. Tuesday, according to a news release.

A second victim apparently received injuries, and police say Kanatzar will be charged with fourth-degree assault in connection to the second victim.

Police say there is no danger to the public, and no more information is available at this time.

Official charges were not yet filed against Kanatzar as of Friday evening.
