Volunteers are needed to help kids with reading skills as a new school semester begins.

The United Way Reading Adventure brings adults into classrooms at Coleman, Ellison, Gene Field, Hyde, Lindbergh, Oak Grove, Parkway, Pickett and Skaith elementary schools to read to students during the second semester. Each program is held at a different time, and volunteers are needed in January, February and March.

Volunteers can sign up to read once, a few times or on a regular schedule.

Students also receive books to encourage reading at home. The program needs donations of new and gently used books for elementary children.

More than 600 people have volunteered for United Way Reading Adventure since 2011.

Those interested in volunteering to read or donating books can contact Jodi Flurry at 816-364-2381 or jodi.flurry@stjosephunitedway.org or register online at stjosephunitedway.org/pie.
