“Tales from the Kansas City Chiefs Sideline: A Collection of the Greatest Chiefs Stories Ever Told” by Bob Gretz and Pete Grathhoff. Beginning with Lamar Hunt and the birth of the AFL, this book presents stories of the Chiefs through 2020 in this edition. Bob Gretz started covering the Chiefs in 1981 for the Kansas City Times and the Kansas City Star. He spent 18 years working on the game-day broadcasts and as a columnist on the team’s website. He had a unique opportunity to see the Chiefs from the inside. It is a must-read for fans wanting to appreciate the team’s history.
“Kingdom Quarterback: Patrick Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs, and How a Once Swingin’ Cow Town Chased the Ultimate Comeback” by Mark Dent and Rustin Dodd. A short history of Kansas City is the jumping-off point to understanding the development of Kansas City and its Chiefs. In 1963, Lamar Hunt uprooted the Dallas Texans and moved them to Kansas City, christening the team The Chiefs. From this beginning to three Super Bowl championships, this is the story of Kansas City, the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. Both authors grew up in Kansas City and have made their mark as sports writers.
“Patrick Mahomes: Making a Difference as a Football MVP” by Katie Kawa. This is a great book to read with your kids that not only follows a great football player but also talks about the values that he lives by. Quoting Mahomes from a magazine interview, “Sometimes it’s not about money. It’s not about fame. It’s about doing what is right.” There are other Mahomes quotes that provide a jumping-off point for discussions with your kids. This book is part of the “People Who Make a Difference” series.
“Kansas City Chiefs” by Zach Wyner and John Willis. Also located in the children’s collection, this book covers several different aspects of the Chiefs in other books including helmets, mascots, uniforms and the stadium. This is a print book with an eBook connection that includes audio, videos, weblinks, slideshows and quizzes. This book is a great source for anyone wanting to create a Chiefs trivia quiz.
“The Story of the Kansas Chiefs” by Jim Whiting. Printed in a format larger than most books on the Chiefs, the pages of this book have excellent large color action pictures of players. Although the book is located in the children’s department, it has an excellent capsule history of the Chiefs, including the advent of Patrick Mahomes. Jim Whiting, the author, has written more than 100 non-fiction books for children.
