Top 5: What to do this weekend

By Blake Hannon St. Joseph News-Press
If you haven’t set your plans for New Year’s Eve yet, this is the place to start. Whether you’re looking for good, old-fashioned family fun or wanting to catch some live music to ring in 2011, we’ve got you covered.
In theaters … or maybe not: This is usually the spot where we recommend a new movie to check out this weekend. The problem is, there isn’t one coming St. Joe’s way. Curses! So, you could check out something that recently came out that you’ve yet to see. (We’d recommend “True Grit” or “The Fighter.”) Or you could read the rest of this list to find out just a few interesting activities happening for New Year’s Eve.
One for the young: For many kids, staying up until the stroke of midnight to celebrate the new year is out of the question and way past their bedtime. But thanks to The Belt Bowl, kids get their own special party with the Family Rock & Bowl, which includes bowling, pizza, soda and a special New Year’s Eve countdown. The event lasts from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday. Reserved lanes are $39.95.
An angelic new year: The sweet classic country sounds of RRT’s production of “Honky Tonk Angels” entertained St. Joe for three weekends of sold-out shows at the Robidoux Landing Playhouse. If you missed it, you’ll get the chance to see it one more time for the new year. A special New Year’s Eve performance of “Honky Tonk Angels,” which includes dinner and a show followed by live music by The Jerry Forney Band, begins at 6 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $30.
A toast to variety: One is a fun rock cover band that tackles everything from Alice in Chains to The Beatles. The other is an eccentric performance art and music collective intent on putting on a visually arresting performance. Respectively, we’re talking about Full Fledge and Sleepwalker. It should make for a pretty interesting combination for the Cafe Acoustic’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve beginning at 9 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the door.
Let’s go Tigers: No, we’re not talking about the Mizzou Tigers. We’re talking about The Republic Tigers. The KC indie rock outfit has had one heck of a year and continues to gain national recognition. But for New Year’s Eve, it’s all about putting on a homecoming show when they headline 96.5 The Buzz’s New Year’s Eve party with special guests Roman Numerals and Saharan Gazelle Boy at 10 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $15.
