Shrek the Musical to be performed at the Missouri Theater this weekend

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- The Robidoux Resident Theatre of St. Joseph is entertaining the community once again this weekend with their production of Shrek the Musical.
Based on the DreamWorks film of the same name, the musical follows the titular character, an ogre named "Shrek" as he goes on a journey, making some friends along the way.
Director Lindsay Prawitz explained more about the show.
"Shrek is a wonderful story about an ogre who gets sent on a quest to rescue a princess and then ends up kind of changing his life for the better," Prawitz said. Prawitz said this is a familiar, high energy show.
"There's so much fun happening on stage, so much color, so much life, and there's all of the story tale characters you know and love," Prawitz said.
One of the choreographers of the musical, Derek Thompson, has done Shrek the Musical before, both on stage and behind the scenes.
"When we did it here at RRT the first time, I played Donkey, so that was super fun," Thompson said. "And then I actually choreographed it again at Gladstone Theatre in the Park ... So it's a show I'm very familiar with."
Thompson said that although he doesn't live in St. Joseph anymore, it was worth it to come back and work with RRT on the show. Thompson explained more about what audiences can expect from the production this weekend.
"It's something you're going to get a little bit of everything with," Thompson said. "You're gonna get a big, high energy anthem number. You're gonna get a funny, campy number that's gonna make you laugh. You're gonna get some ones that are gonna tug at the heart strings a little bit. And so overall, it's just gonna be a really fun night at the theater and something that the whole family is gonna enjoy."
Performances of the show will be at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 7, and Saturday, March 8. The final performance will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.
Tickets are $20 to $40 for children and $28 to $48 for adults. Tickets can be purchased at rrtstjoe.org.
