Mayor John Josendale flipped the switch Friday evening for the lighting of the Holiday Park and South Pole to officially begin the festive season for St. Joseph residents.

“It’s an exciting time,” Mayor John Josendale said. “The holiday season is always good because people get together, family and friends, and this is one way to do it- to come out and see the lights…this is exciting and it is a lot of fun and it’s fun to do with family and friends. This is something we can show off.

A tradition spanning more than 40 years, Holiday Park at Krug Park began as an idea from the Optimist Club. In 1981, this group of individuals spoke with the parks and recreation director with an idea to decorate the park for the holidays.

Since then, this tradition has attracted thousands of locals and visitors with its intricate light displays.

“It’s fun for the kids, it’s fun for grandma and grandpa, but the true heroes are the guys that work for the Parks and Recreation Department,” Assistant Parks Director Jeff Atkins said. “They work for almost a month up here, rain or shine, because they know it has to be ready to turn on tonight. They just do an amazing job each year.”

The Holiday Park at Krug Park and the South Pole at Hyde Park will be open every evening from 6 to 10 p.m., weather permitting, until Jan. 1, so everyone will have plenty of opportunity to experience this St. Joseph holiday tradition.
