See St. Joseph: Get ready for the holidays

Thanksgiving has arrived, bringing stuffing, family gatherings and this week’s edition of See St. Joseph. The community is starting the holidays off with a bang, and there are several activities to get everyone in the holly-jolly spirit.
What’s a holiday season in St. Joseph without the lighting of Holiday Park and the South Pole at Krug and Hyde parks? Join News-Press NOW as Kendra Simpson goes live for the lighting ceremony at Krug Park. For decades, St. Joseph residents have cherished the decorations that fill every corner of the parks. Dress warmly and join the ceremony at Krug’s Lagoon Circle for free hot cocoa and cookies. Then, tune into Elf Radio, turn off the headlights and enjoy the merriment. The switch will be flipped at 6 p.m. Friday at Krug Park. The South Side will celebrate its own holiday park lighting for the South Pole at Hyde Park. The Southside Progressive Association will serve free cookies and cocoa at the gazebo with Santa. The switch at Hyde Park will flip at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
After the magic of the parks, why not experience the holidays Downtown? Seasonal activities, dining and shopping and it’s all in beautiful and festive Downtown St. Joseph. Beginning this weekend, Downtown will be home to local vendors every Saturday to help make everyone’s holiday shopping that much easier. Free carriage rides, festive window displays and the all-new “Merry Market in Felix Street Square. are just some of what’s in store. The Downtown Association will host a holiday party and Santa will have the honor of turning on the lights and beginning the firework show. It all begins 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, in Felix Street Square.
For those looking for that classic Christmas feeling, First Christian Church. is hosting a Christmas organ concert this weekend. The sounds of the church’s historic organ will spread some festive spirit. Performers will sing both sacred and popular Christmas carols, so everyone better get their jingle bells ready. The event is free but any donations will benefit Community Missions and its cold weather shelter. The concert begins at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Christian Church at 927 Faraon St.
