See St. Joseph: Holiday celebrations kick off in St. Joseph

By Kendra Simpson
St. Joseph residents don’t have to go to Kansas City this weekend for a good time with loads of local entertainment and activities for the whole family. This week’s edition of See St. Joseph features a musical about the Civil War, a visit with Vikings and some festive shopping.
Consider spending an evening with a few of America’s favorite women. A story that stands the test of time, Robidoux Resident Theatre is bringing “Little Women the Musical” to the Missouri Theater, 717 Edmond St., this weekend. This Civil War story of love and family is brought to life on the stage in this production filled with personal discovery, heartache and hope. The curtain opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8 and 9, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10. To purchase tickets, go to rrtstjoe.org.
To step even further back in time, head down to Castle Bridge Event Center, 8403 U.S. 59, on Saturday, Nov. 9, for VikingFest. The event from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. blends mythology and fiction with historical accuracy to immerse visitors in the life of these legendary explorers. The event will include entertainment, demonstrations and activities, vendors, food and even a petting zoo. Ticket prices vary.
The Halloween season has come and gone, and many St. Joseph residents can’t wait for the holiday season to officially begin. What better way to do so than with the annual Sugarplum Festival? For more than 40 years, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art has opened its doors the second weekend in November to welcome residents to a winter-shopping wonderland. Unique gifts, hand-made crafts, vintage goods, dozens of local businesses, auctions, live performances and so much more lie in wait in this St. Joseph tradition. The shopping adventure goes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art, 2818 Frederick Ave.
