Silver and Gold Club celebrates 10 year anniversary
By Jazmine Knight
Senior citizens from across Northwest Missouri gathered together to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their beloved Gold and Silver Club.
The idea first originated from Meierhoffer Funeral Home with goals to “engage, educate and entertain seniors” according to Jane Graves, Meierhoffer’s community outreach coordinator.
They believed that seniors didn’t really have a place to go or things to do in the community. It also gave them a chance to gather with their friends, spouses or family and go to an event together.
It served as a way to get seniors around others their age and to get them out and having fun.
Back in 2014 when they started, they had only 18 members. Now in 2024, they will serve about 1,600 people with approximately 400 attending their monthly luncheons.
At these luncheons, they focus on educating their attendees on ways to stay healthy and happy. Sometimes they embark on different games and activities. One memorable event is their yearly visit to Cool Crest where they play mini golf.
Graves says “it’s just like bringing them back to high school to see them all together in a room just having the best time ever.”
Over these past 10 years, it has become something that everyone looks forward to.
“I didn’t realize how much they looked forward to it until last month, when we had to cancel it twice,” said Graves.
“That date that we had on the calendar was definitely set in stone for them because they work their schedules around this monthly event. It’s something they look forward to.”
10 year member, Marilyn Tindle, says they all have fun together.
“I don’t miss, maybe the only time is if I’m sick or some emergency. But I look forward to this. This is a nice place and everybody is around the same age. So we just have fun,” said Tindle.
Tindle continues by mentioning some of her favorite activities.
“Every month is something new, something there, something to look forward to. And that’s why I like it.”
