Several groups team up for Super Bowl of Service

By Kendra Simpson

Volunteers from the Youth Volunteer Corps St. Joseph Youth Alliance, the St. Joe Bucks football team, Rolling Hills Auto Plaza and Girl Scout troop 1576 all teamed up for what they’re calling the Super Bowl of Service.

This community driven initiative is raising funds and collecting food for Second Harvest food bank in honor of the Chiefs going against the 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Those who gave a monetary donation or five canned items to the cause were entered in a raffle for prizes, including a basket of Girl Scout cookies, a $50 gift card to Rally’s and a $100 gift card to Hyvee.

“Nowadays, you see a lot of poverty, a lot of, like, homeless camps and a lot of people just walking around that don’t really have a lot,” St. Joe Bucks player Giovanni Burk, said. “And so it’s important to do things like this, like we be able to help a family or a person in need or anything like that.”

While the holiday season sees many donations, they tend to waver off over time. With Saturday’s initiative, the groups hope to change that.

“With our community, the need for food is high,” Program Director for the Youth Volunteer Corps St. Joseph Youth Alliance, Misty Coyle said. “Everybody donates during the holiday season, which is great. And it’s wonderful. But then after the holiday season, sometimes people forget that we still have to donate food so we just want to make that awareness, too. We want to bring that awareness to our community and help serve others and stand by them.”
