See St. Joseph: Love, pajama parties and Taylor Swift

By Kendra Simpson
A weekend without football may seem tragic for some, but luckily there is still plenty to do in town to keep everyone entertained in this week’s edition of See St. Joseph.
All the town’s princes and princesses have been cordially invited to the Princesses and Pillows Pajama Party hosted by AR Workshop. Wear your comfiest PJs, your shiniest tiara and join the party with some of your favorite princesses. Guests will get to participate in a pillow craft, enjoy a cupcake and take pictures with fairy tale royalty. The party starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the AR Workshop located at 3855 Frederick Ave.
As Jackie DeShannon once sang, “What the world needs now is love, sweet love” and that’s exactly what The Love Gathering is intended for. Hosted by Connect Ministries, it is a celebration of love in all forms whether it be romantic, platonic, religious or familial, so all are welcome, coupled or not. The gathering features a meet and greet, dinner, music and sharing of love stories followed by a fellowship. The event is free to the public, but donations are accepted. The celebration begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, at the Metropolitan. To find out more about the Love Gathering or how to support Connect Ministries, visit their website at www.jimmiebratcher.com/connect-ministries.
Here in St. Joseph, we love to brag about our celebrity connections, like Jesse James or Eminem or that one time Taylor Swift performed at Trails West!, but now we’ve got new bragging rights with local author Elora Maxwell and the upcoming release of her second novel “Blindsided by the Spotlight.” Inspired by a familiar romance, global country star Mae Evans meets upcoming pro-football player Wyatt Lucas. But how do the two national celebrities form a meaningful relationship with the entire country watching? Maxwell said while this is not usually the type of book she would write, she wrote it for her fellow Swifties.
“The very first game that we saw Taylor Swift out back in September, I screamed at the television,” Maxwell said. “I just had an epiphany of something I wanted to write about. How do people with such high-profile jobs and people who really care about what they do, how do they handle their professional lives but also their relationships with significant others and family? That’s really where this book started.”
The Story Collective will be hosting an author event starring Maxwell herself where she will be signing copies of her newest release starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3.
To close the weekend out, B&J Skate is hosting a Daddy-Daughter skate. Fathers can spend some quality time with their favorite Valentines skating to their favorite songs, playing games and, of course, eating way too much sugar. Every daughter will receive a gift, there will be photo opportunities and even a special daddy-daughter dance at the end of the night. Skating goes from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 4, at B&J Skate.
