New Generation Singers welcome new members for Spring ’24 season

By Kendra Simpson
The New Generation Singers held their membership rally Sunday evening as a way to welcome new members to their musical family.
For over 50 years, the New G Singers have performed and spread their message of love and acceptance, not only for the St. Joseph community, but for the rest of the country as well.
This season, the musical group is planning a trip to California, where they will visit places like the Grand Canyon and Disneyland along the way.
While they know it may be intimidating to be a new member in such a tight knit group, the leadership of New G expressed their goal of inclusion, regardless of differences in faith, beliefs or any other differences.
“I think the youth still need what we provide,” New Generation Singers Executive Director Bemo Myers said. “You know, part of our mission statement is to bring kids together from varying denominations, varying beliefs, and kind of come together and unite together and just focus on the things that unite us, not the things that divide us.”
“Seeing people that are changed by the things we do that we don’t even realize,” New G President Katie Mendenhall said. “That’s kind of where New G hits me hard is where the little things that we do throughout our songs and our dialogs and different things, how big of an impact they have on people and we don’t even realize it.”
For those who missed Sunday’s rally but is interested in connecting, anyone in the eighth grade and up is welcome to join the group in their weekly rehearsals at Ashland United Methodist Church from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sundays.
