Honoring an iconic civil rights leader, a local event will promote racial unity and bring the community together on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

MidCity Excellence will host its 10th annual Solutions Summit on Monday, Jan. 15. The event will include two featured speakers and entertainment from MCE’s St Joe Stixx Drumline and Trashcan Band.

Kimberly Warren, the founder of MCE, said the annual event serves an important purpose.

“We come together to talk about our strengths, and our theme this year is ‘Geniuses Live Here,’” she said. “And geniuses happen in people showing up to school and their job every day and working on the hard stuff and coming up with solutions and problem-solving and using their critical-thinking skills to make this community, our neighborhoods and our personal homes a better place for all people.”

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Word of Life Church, 3902 N.E. Riverside Road. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. and lunch is included.

The speakers will be William “Bill” Alexander, the CEO and president of Alexander Mechanical Inc., and WNBA Chaplain Coordinator Fleceia “Fe” Comeaux.

Warren said everyone is invited to the summit.

“This is a family event, so we truly want employers to come, families to come, moms and pops,” she said. “The kids are gonna be performing. We have the MidCity Excellence Trashcan Band, which is our youngest group, they are going to be performing for you. And this will be an edge-of-the-seat performance. We’ll also feature the St. Joe Stixx … and so we would like to showcase the talents and the skills that they have, and talk about how they can better their world by using their idle time in a very positive way.”

This event is free and open to the public, although an RSVP is required by Jan. 8. To RSVP, contact Warren at 816-273-5450 or Isaura Garcia at isaura@visitmce.org or visit visitmce.networkforgood.com/events/65584-mlk-jr-solutions-summit.
