The public has spoken, honoring “Motherly Love” with the Allied Arts Council’s 2023-24 St. Joseph Sculpture Walk People’s Choice Award.
The piece is located at the corner of Edmond and North Seventh streets. The artist, Gedion Nyanhongo, of Fortoria, Ohio, was born in Zimbabwe.
“Many artists create by building — I create by subtracting. The natural configuration of a stone calls to me and I remove what doesn’t belong. I’m fascinated by the power of the love between a mother and a child,” Nyanhongo said. “With this sculpture, I was exploring the intense closeness of that bond, which seems to exist between them in every culture.”
The spring stone sculpture may be purchased for $11,500. To buy it or any other pieces from this year of a sculpture walk, contact the Allied Arts Council at 816-233-0231, teresa.fankhauser@stjoearts.org or stop in our office at 118 S. Eighth St.
Sculptures will be de-installed during May. Details of the 2024-25 Sculpture Walk will be released soon.
