A St. Joseph man is being held without bond on a charge of second-degree assault for his involvement in a Downtown shooting that left a man in critical condition.
Derius L. Davis, 30, is set for an initial appearance in court at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8. The victim, Jonathan Ross, 37, is listed in critical condition, Capt. Jeff Wilson with the St. Joseph Police Department said.
The shooting happened at about 10 p.m. on Oct. 5 in a parking lot at 724 Jules St. Davis walked over to a couple involved in an argument and asked the man to leave the woman alone, according to a probable cause statement filed in the case. Davis and the man then started talking to each other, and Davis pulled out a gun as the victim walked up to him, the court documents said.
Ross was shot in the leg/groin area and was taken to Mosaic Life Care for emergency surgery, the probable cause statement said.
Court records show Davis has multiple failures to appear in court in his history and a conviction for domestic assault.
Wilson said the investigation is continuing.
