Central High School Activities Director David Lau is facing a felony charge in Florida for an incident that occurred in May.

Lau was charged with a third-degree felony of resisting an officer with violence and pleaded not guilty on July 8.

According to a probable cause statement from an officer in Naples, Florida, officers responded to a club called Blue Martini on May 12 after its management said one of its employees was battered by a customer.

According to the arresting officer’s statement, he provided security outside of Blue Martini and identified Lau and two females walking quickly out of the business as another officer reviewed security footage.

The arresting officer then witnessed security rush out of the club and say that one of the women leaving was a suspect in the potential battery, according to the statement. In the statement, the officer yelled at the three to stop as he ran after them when Lau turned around and “extended both of his hands” to stop the officer from catching up to the females.

The statement continued, saying, “David then used his arm to push me and grabbed me to prevent me from catching up to the female subjects.”

The school district provided a statement this week acknowledging that its leaders are aware of the case.

“The St. Joseph School District cannot provide any specific information regarding personnel matters, as they are confidential. The District is aware of the situation and takes such matters very seriously. Generally speaking, the District investigates personnel matters and determines the appropriate steps to take in accordance with Board policy and the law. The District is unable to provide further details at this time,” the statement said.

News-Press NOW contacted Lau’s defense attorney’s office and was told there would not be a comment on the case.
