Man charged in weekend shooting

A St. Joseph man is in custody in connection with a shooting last weekend near North Ninth and Corby streets.

Roy Lee Despain, 52, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon and is held at the Buchanan County Jail without bail. Despain allegedly shot at another man just before 6:30 p.m. on March 23, striking him in the head just above the eye, according to a probable cause statement filed in the case. Video shows Despain asking a witness where the victim is just before the shooting, and another video shows that man telling a witness Despain shot him, court documents said.

The victim, 29-year-old Blakley Whisenand, was taken to the hospital in stable condition, St. Joseph police said.

Despain is set to appear for a hearing at 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 1, at the Buchanan County Courthouse in front of Associate Circuit Judge Chad Gaddie.
