Dragoos obtain new sentencing date

By Marcus Clem
A local couple convicted in the Jan. 6, 2021, incident at the U.S. Capitol won’t be sentenced on the schedule previously planned.
Federal prosecutors have agreed to give Kim and Steven Dragoo three more months before they are to appear on April 12 before Judge Beryl Howell of the District of Columbia District Court.
Court filings show that prosecutors made the unopposed motion on behalf of the Dragoos’ attorney, Bruce Castor Jr., to accommodate his travel schedule. Known as a continuance, the decision results in a later-than-planned date in which the defendant appears before the judge to learn whether or not they will remain a free person, and if not, for how long they must be jailed.
The case has thus far seen three continuances, all initiated by the prosecution. Originally set for Nov. 17, 2023, the Dragoos received a delay to Dec. 1 of that year, and then a further delay to Jan. 26. Continuances are routine events in federal proceedings.
Meanwhile, Kim Dragoo is competing with nine other people for three available seats in an election set for April 2, which will now occur before her sentencing date. Dragoo’s plea of guilty to a misdemeanor does not preclude her candidacy, as she is not a felon.
