The country mouse and the city mouse

Remember the story about the country mouse that went to visit his cousin in the city, and then the visitor returned the favor by playing host to the city mouse? Both learned new things about the other’s lifestyle, including advantages and disadvantages. Each developed an appreciation for what they had, and for how they could benefit one another.
A similar theme was in mind when a group of leaders got together in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 2003 to plan a Farm-City Breakfast that would bring together town folks and their country cousins to celebrate the partnerships between farmers, stockmen, and businesses in towns. Of course, governmental leaders play a vital role in the livelihood of citizens, no matter what side of the city limits they live and work.
In 2004 the first event was held, quite appropriately, during National Ag Week, with more than 80 people in attendance. Fast-forward 20 years and you’ll arrive at the 21st annual Farm-City Breakfast, which will take place on Friday, March 14. Donnie Miller, who’s been involved in coordination since the first meeting, says a lot has changed. “We expect to have at least 600 folks in attendance this year, and with the proceeds we’ll be able to fund even more scholarships to students wanting to pursue careers in ag-related fields. But the most important things have remained constant,” he remarked. “The contributions of and the opportunities in ag-related fields are showcased, and folks are gaining a greater appreciation of our connection to farmers.”
