Recipe corner: Spiced hot chocolate

This delicious spiced hot chocolate recipe from 1954 is a real treat on cold days.

Spiced Hot Chocolate

4 squares unsweetened chocolate (4 oz)

1 cup boiling water

1 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1 quart milk

1 cup whipping cream, stiffly beaten

  1. Cut the chocolate into small pieces and add to boiling water in a large saucepan. Heat until the chocolate is melted.
  2. Stir in the sugar, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg and stir until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is hot.
  3. Slowly add the milk and mix well. Remove from the heat when the milk is hot and fold in 3/4 of the whipped cream.
  4. Pour into cups or mugs and garnish with whipped cream puffs with an additional dash of nutmeg or cinnamon.
