Old-fashioned holidays
By Lucinda (Paden) Hind Submitted to Corner Post
Remember those old-fashioned holidays?
Making snow angels under the sun’s full rays,
That made the snow and icicles glisten,
So quiet, yet you’d stop to listen.
Then we’d go running in to decorate the tree.
We’d take out the old, tattered box
where we knew there’d be,
The same old stringy piece of garland,
And the same ornaments we’d made years before, by hand.
When we finished, we’d sit by the tree and sing.
And we’d wonder what Santa would bring.
We’d look around the room at the
old fashioned Christmas cards,
And we’d try really hard,
To read the hand-written letters inside,
All written with pride.
One is from Aunt Sally, another from Minnie,
All made out to the kids, Bill and Ginny.
We all remember those old-fashioned holidays,
That are now replaced by new days.
Where the angel making is replaced
by computers and TV streamers,
The stringy piece of garland, by new, as shiny as the stars.
And the personal cards with hand-written letters,
Are now printed cards with type-written letters.
It’s sad to think that our children won’t know,
The old-fashioned things, that even though,
We’re all grown up we’ll never forget.
But maybe it’s not too late yet…
If in the future we’ll put away,
The new games of today,
And get out the old ones,
Like Yahtzee, Canasta and Clue.
You remember those ones?
Also, put aside the computer and dig out paper and pen,
A letter like that would be worth a dozen,
Of those “Office Memo” type letters,
We send out now. Now wouldn’t that be better?
We could give our children memories to cherish,
And maybe if we really wish,
We can make new memories as good
as the old-fashioned kind,
So that in the future when they come to mind,
They’ll bring a smile to our face,
The one we came so close to replace.
