Historic village theatre still entertaining
By Submitted to Corner Post
The Brownville Village Theatre has been providing summer entertainment in true rotating repertory since 1967, making it one of the oldest repertory theatres in the region. True rotating repertory is a rarity. During BVT summer stock, every time the curtain rises a different one of its five shows plays. This creates a one of kind experience, with audiences being able to see five different shows in one weekend. You’ll find the theatre in Brownville, Nebraska, one of the state’s first communities and a current hub for arts, history and culture. In 2022, Brownville was recognized by the Nebraska Arts Council as a creative district in the state.
The success of the theatre, also known as BVT, is due in great part to its summer repertory season employing 12-15 young theatre artists from all over the nation. The theatre’s home is over a century old and was formerly the Brownville Christian Church. It draws over 3,000 audience members annually to Brownville from throughout the Midwest. Artistic Directors Mitch Bean and Rachel Curtiss, a husband-and-wife duo, are committed to the tradition and growth of the Brownville Village Theatre. Both have been with BVT since their first summer as company members in 2012.
The BVT will produce a Halloween show as part of its Young Performer’s program, a program that holds workshops and shows throughout the year for performers and aspiring theatre artists grades 2nd-12th. Gravestone Manor by Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus will be playing at the theatre on October 25th at 7pm, and October 26th & 27th at 2pm. Tickets and information are available at BrownvilleVillageTheatre.com.
