The grass is not always greener on the other side. Sometimes it’s a matter of perspective. If I look down rows of crops before the plants are tall, I tend to see far more dirt than plants. But viewed from the side, the same field at the same point in time looks much different. The green of the plants blocks most of the brown furrows I saw before. It’s that way in many aspects of what we notice in our nation, region, community, neighborhood, or family. Perspective can skew our viewpoints.

Likewise, when I look across the expanse of a lawn, I find it often appears different than when I look down upon the lawn. From above I don’t see as much of the green profile of grass blades but I do see more dirt. Looking down on something is not the best way to take in the whole of what is around us, and we can miss some intriguing things just beyond the periphery of our downward gaze.

A third thought to consider about where the grass is greener is that it tends to be greener where it gets watered. How easy it is to envy the lush lawn and garden of someone else. How often we fail to recognize the foresight and effort that made that beauty come to life and flourish.

In upcoming issues of the Corner Post we will spotlight hidden gems in our region that you may not be aware of, or perhaps never were able to visit. Some are simple, yet pleasant and interesting. Some are wonderful or exciting. You may be surprised to learn how plentiful they are. You may be surprised how close they are to you.

If you are proud of a hidden gem in your community or would like to share an experience of a visit to a hidden gem in our region, we’d like to hear from you. Is it a specific event or site? Is it a day-trip that takes in multiple community treasures? Is it a weekend getaway for more time to relax or play? Tell us about it. We want to share the perspective of just how green the grass is in our corner of the world! And we want to share the foresight and effort of those who brought them to life.
