Keep Listening

News-Press Now

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- “Without counsel, plans fail; but with many advisers, they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22).

This is just one of many passages in both the Old and New Testaments where we are advised to seek the counsel of others. A popular saying related to that idea goes like this: “There’s a reason God gave you two ears and one mouth — so that you can listen much more than you speak.”

While we are individuals with a unique identity who are valued for who we are, we are simultaneously people who are created for community and given the gift of community to guide us along the way. When we make the most of the wisdom around us as we make choices, the Bible calls us “wise.” For instance, the Book of Proverbs also says: “The way of a fool seems right in his own eyes, but a wise person listens to advice” (Proverbs 12:15).

As people of faith, we are called to do our best to care for one another, to be present for one another and to be there for one another during times of difficulty. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul writes, “Bear one another’s burdens, because by doing so, you fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

In a time where it is tempting to discount or ignore the voices of others, including those outside of our immediate circles, perhaps it is time to embrace the benefits of listening to and honoring the voices of others. We don’t all have to agree on everything. However, when we listen and keep listening, we can find wisdom we didn’t realize was there.

Also, when seeking to give wisdom and guidance to those who are struggling, we are engaging in an act of compassion in ways that can make an impact long after we are gone.

Keep praying, keep loving and keep listening.
