Always Learning

We start learning from the very beginning. We go from full dependence to greater independence, especially when it comes to basic functions. Even if there are physical limitations that limit our independence, we still learn and grow.

There is a sense in which we are always learning and growing. Some continue the learning process more formally, through higher education. Others learn through mentoring and training on the job.

What limits our learning? Aside from genetic issues that may hinder us, the answer is in the mirror. We are often the biggest limit on our growth and learning.

The beginning of the school year reminds us that there is much to learn. That’s not only true for school kids, it’s true for all of us. The Bible says that “wise men and women” are “always learning” (see Proverbs 18:15). Other verses like Psalm 32:8 invite us to learn and grow: “I will instruct you and teach in the way you should go,” according to this passage.

Not only are we to continue to learn, we are to put what we learn into practice. In the New Testament, Paul writes to a new church he planted: “Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put into practice. And the peace of God will be with you” (Philippians 4:9).

Learning stops when we stop where we are and refuse to grow. Learning stops when we limit ourselves to only those with whom we agree. Learning stops when we refuse to expand our thinking. Learning stops when we refuse to put into practice what we learn.

Let’s be lifelong learners. We don’t have to agree with everyone, but we can learn from nearly everyone. Don’t be afraid to learn, and, in the words of the great poet Maya Angelou, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.”
