A prayer for teachers

By Charles Christian
Teachers have been highly respected throughout history.
In Ancient Greece, revolutionary teachers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle not only influenced the Roman Empire, but they also impacted centuries of thinkers and leaders.
The Bible is filled with references to “teaching” and “teachers.” In the Old Testament, the word “rabbi,” who was the key religious and educational leader, is often translated as “teacher.” In the New Testament, even Jesus himself is referred to as “teacher,” and part of the mandate Jesus gives to his followers is to “teach” (see Matthew 28:18-20).
The role of teacher took on even greater significance in villages and households, and beyond that, the first universities. A “professor,” puts forth teaching in a certain subject or a variety of subjects. Great teachers in both religious and non-religious traditions have been honored and rewarded.
However, most great teachers tend to get overlooked. Many simply do their jobs, often with relatively little pay. The main reward for all teachers, even those in ancient times, is seen in the growth of their students. Teachers spend their lives investing in others, so it is no wonder all of us can remember teachers who were important figures in our lives. Teachers can be life-changers.
Because of their importance, and because the job comes with many challenges — especially these days — perhaps we can begin the school year with a special prayer for those who teach, regardless of what grade level they teach.
“Merciful God, you are our ultimate teacher and guide; and you provide us with men and women who care enough to invest in us with their gifts and training. Give them the strength and the wisdom to carry out the calling to teach. Give their students attentiveness and curiosity. Give those around them the sensitivity to support and nurture them throughout the educational journey. Most of all, God, grant them the ability to have peaceful nights of rest, fruitful days of instruction and the ability to see the results of their efforts as the years go by. Amen.”
Every once in a while during the school year, it may be helpful to reuse this prayer and even share it with a teacher who is important to you or a family member. Have a great school year!
