Volunteers ‘beautify’ Downtown on Saturday

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) -- A Downtown event on Saturday morning invited volunteers out to clean litter in St. Joseph.
The event, hosted by Beautify St. Joseph and Main Street St. Joseph, aimed to help clean Downtown and bring awareness about the litter problem.
Christy George, the president of Main Street St. Joseph, expressed gratitude for the turnout of volunteers and explained why they decided to host the event.
"I think it's great when this many volunteers come out to support Downtown and clean it up," George said. "I mean the wind's been blowing a lot and there's been a lot of trash rumbling around. Spring's here, we're going to start concerts soon and it's just a great time to come clean it up."
At the event, Mayor John Josendale gave a special proclamation.
"We did a proclamation about April being Litter Awareness Month," Josendale said. "We're trying to make people aware as we regenerate and redo Downtown."
Terry Turbak is the Chairperson of Beautify St. Joseph and she shared that her favorite part of hosting events like this is connecting with fellow volunteers.
"It's amazing how much people care about their city and connecting with those groups, organizations and individuals has been the greatest reward," Turbak said.
Turbak says everyone can make a difference.
"Quite often you hear people say 'somebody needs to do something about this' and I think everybody is somebody," Turbak said.
