Sandra Froyd was born July 21,1944 in Maryville, Missouri, to Mildred (Coffelt) and Clifford Froyd. She is the youngest of three daughters who grew up on a farm southeast of Maryville near the community of Bedison. Both of her sisters, Winona Rupprecht (92) of Arizona (and now Tennessee), and Colleen Brooner (89) of St. Joseph are still living and the sisters were all together in April of this year.

Sandra’s early education was at a one room country schoolhouse, Rose Hill. Both of her sisters attended, as well as their father and also grandmother, Mary (Furlong) Froyd, when they were children. Mary attended at least one year there with Dale Carnegie. For junior high and the first two years of high school, she transferred to Horace Mann, a lab school on Northwest Missouri State College (now University) Campus. In 1960, the school closed for grades above 6th grade and the students had to choose a new school to attend. She chose to remain in Maryville and attended her last two years of high school at Maryville High, the competitor of her former school. The highlight for her was when she was chosen by the student body as “Miss MHS” her senior year, feeling fully accepted!

After high school, she attended Graceland College (now University) where she met her future husband, Jerry Mogg. She graduated after two years with an AA degree and transferred to NWMS to complete her B.S. degree in Vocational Home Economics in 1966. She taught one year at Stewartsville High School and several Adult Education classes in sewing and tailoring. After Jerry’s deployment as an Army Officer and getting his Master’s Degree they returned to St. Joseph and she became a full time homemaker, mother and wife, while helping Jerry as he set up his business. Once her sons were both in school, she started a business, Drapery Decor, that she operated out of their home for many years.

Sandra and Jerry were married in Maryville at the Community of Christ on June 20,1965. They have lived in St. Joseph most of their adult lives after Jerry’s military service, and Jerry completing graduate school at KU.

They have two sons, Greg (Gayla Coffman) in Lee’s Summit, Missouri and Bryan (Heather Bartlett) in Littleton, Colorado. They have four grandchildren: Greg and Gayla’s two sons, Jordan (Shannon Reynolds) of Belton, Missouri and Brayden (Audry Briggs) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Bryan and Heather’s two daughters, Amber, a sophomore at Pitzer College, Claremont, California and Allison, a senior at Heritage High School in Littleton. They have one great grandson, Leo Jay, whose parents are Jordan and Shannon.

Sandra has been very active in The Community of Christ all of her life, as her parents always took their daughters to church when the doors were open. She had responsibilities from youth on up in congregations, districts and at world church levels. It has greatly influenced her life. The areas she served in leadership were: music, women’s ministry, youth ministry, Christian education, youth camps, family camp and a lay minister as co-pastor. She also served as a volunteer in the St. Joseph community with Habitat For Humanity and English As a Second Language.

Sandra used to be an excellent seamstress, making most of the family’s clothing and décor items until her sons no longer thought it was “cool”! Later, her sewing led to her business and then to quilting. She has made many quilts, with designing being her favorite part.

Another favorite activity she and Jerry both enjoy is travel, and they have traveled in all 50 states and many countries in most of the continents around the world, witnessing the beauty of creation and connections with people of many cultures. She is going to celebrate her 80th Birthday in St. Thomas, with most of their immediate family.

Sandra would love to hear from any of you who know her. For USPS send to: 1902 Park Ridge Dr., St. Joseph, MO.64503; For email: smogg44@gmail.com. She is also on Facebook.
