Tennessee joins nine other US states with measles outbreaks. Here’s what to know
SUMMARY: Tennessee health officials have confirmed a measles outbreak, which brings the number of U.S. states with outbreaks to 10. The U.S. has at least 800 measles cases in 2025, and two children and an adult have died from measles-related illnesses. Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Montana, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Texas have active measles outbreaks. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. It is prevented by vaccines. Measles cases also have been reported in Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont and Washington.

Judge bars Trump from denying federal funds to ‘sanctuary’ cities that limit immigration cooperation
SUMMARY: A federal judge is barring the Trump administration from denying or conditioning the use of federal funds to “sanctuary” jurisdictions. U.S. Judge William Orrick said Thursday that a preliminary injunction was appropriate because President Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting sanctuary cities were unconstitutional. Orrick issued the injunction sought by San Francisco and more than a dozen other municipalities. They sued over a pair of executive orders Trump issued targeting local municipalities that limit cooperation with federal immigration efforts. The Republican president announced a similar order in 2017. Orrick said the administration must provide written notice of his order to all federal departments and agencies by Monday.

But his exchanges with voters over health care spending, Social Security and the war in Ukraine was civil for the most part. Ricketts repeatedly fell back on the need for spending cuts, insisting that something must be done to curb the $36 billion federal deficit.

Wildfire burns thousands of acres in a rural, rugged area of Nebraska
SUMMARY: A wildfire burning in a rugged, wooded area of Nebraska grew to more than 6,600 acres but hundreds of firefighters have managed to contain the blaze. By Thursday, about 40% of the Plum Creek Fire was contained. The fire started Monday afternoon near Johnstown, Nebraska, after a controlled burn got away. More than 50 fire departments and National Guard members responded to battle the flames, which are mainly in a steep, rugged canyon area. Planes have dropped fire retardant, and the National Guard has used two Black Hawk helicopters to drop water. Nebraska has typical warm, dry, windy conditions for springtime.

North Dakota enacts nation’s first law shielding Roundup’s maker from some cancer lawsuits
SUMMARY: North Dakota has become the first state to enact a law that could shield the maker of the popular Roundup brand of weedkiller from lawsuits. The law signed by Gov. Kelly Armstrong declares that federally approved labels on pesticides are sufficient to satisfy any failure-to-warn claims in court. That could undercut a key argument used in about 181,000 legal claims against Bayer, the company that makes Roundup. Similar legislation is pending before the Georgia governor and was considered this year in at least nine other states. Bayer denies the cancer claims and points to federal approval of its labeling.
