ENT–FILM-THE FRIEND-DOG MOVIE

‘The Friend’: When the star of the movie is a very good boy

SUMMARY: The star of “The Friend” has the loping stride of Robert Mitchum and the droopy, melancholy eyes of Peter Lorre. He has those classic instantly accessible, forever unknowable Hollywood features and when he walks down the street with co-stars Naomi Watts and Bill Murray, people’s heads turn. A harlequin Great Dane and star of “The Friend,” Bing is the latest in a long line of four-legged, big-screen breakout stars. But unlike canine idols before him, the Iowan is gigantic. Toto would fit in his paw and Asta could comfortably sit on his head.

US–SEVERE WEATHER

Storms could unleash deadly floods, strong tornadoes in large part of US in coming days

SUMMARY: Forecasters are warning of potentially deadly flash flooding and strong tornadoes in coming days from a new round of storms. Waves of thunderstorms are poised to strike parts of the Midwest and South later this week. National Weather Service forecasters say the potent system raises the risk of life-threatening flash flooding in parts of the U.S. starting Wednesday. The storms bearing heavy rains are expected in parts of Texas, the lower Mississippi Valley and the Ohio Valley. The new round of storms comes as residents in northern Michigan continue digging out from a weekend ice storm.

US–DC-BLACK LIVES MATTER PLAZA

Black Lives Matter Plaza’s end — like its beginning — is a barometer of the times

SUMMARY: It started as an ordinary D.C. intersection, with a modest white church on the corner and an unobstructed view of the White House. Then, in the pandemic summer of 2020, it transformed. The death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police turned the nexus of 16th and H streets into a focal point for decades-old grievances over police brutality and historic racial inequities. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser ordered the creation of Black Lives Matter Plaza, with official street signs and “Black Lives Matter” painted in giant yellow letters on a multi-block stretch of 16th Street. Now it has changed again, an indicator of America’s political pendulum swings. Workers have completed removing the letters, and the street signs have come down.

The US Bank executive killed in a plane crash died of blunt-force injuries

SUMMARY: A medical examiner says the U.S. Bank executive who was killed when his plane crashed into a home in suburban Minneapolis died of blunt-force injuries. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office positively identified him Tuesday as 63-year-old Terrance Robert Dolan, of Edina. He was the pilot and sole occupant of the single-engine Socata TBM7, which went down Saturday in Brooklyn Park. Dolan was vice chair and chief administration officer at Minneapolis-based U.S. Bank. A man inside the house escaped the resulting fire, but the house was destroyed. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

US-MED–HHS-FUNDING CLAWBACK-LAWSUIT

States sue Trump administration for rescinding billions in health funding

SUMMARY: Attorneys general and other officials from 23 states and the District of Columbia are suing the Trump administration for its decision to claw back $11 billion that went to public health departments for COVID-19 efforts and addiction and mental health programs. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Rhode Island on Tuesday. The lawsuit says not paying the rest of the federal money will have a devastating effect on public health. US–IMMIGRATION-SCHOLARS DETAINED

University of Minnesota student who was detained by ICE sues for immediate release

SUMMARY: A University of Minnesota graduate student who’s being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement is suing for his immediate release. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of 28-year-old Doğukan Günaydın, a Turkish citizen who contends his arrest violated his rights. He was detained by plainclothes officers outside his St. Paul home Thursday. The Department of Homeland Security says he was arrested because of a past drunken driving conviction on his record, not for any political activity. His student visa was revoked the same day. Günaydın’s attorney argues the arrest and visa termination are illegal.

US–FAMILY PLANNING MONEY

Trump administration pauses some family planning grants as it investigates compliance with laws

SUMMARY: The Trump administration has paused some family planning grants as it investigates whether the providers are following federal laws. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says that no decisions are final. Organizations that receive the funding say that even a delay jeopardizes access to cancer screenings, contraception, and sexually transmitted infection services. They say all the grants are on hold in seven states. Nine Planned Parenthood affiliates and other groups that provide abortion are among those where funding is being withheld. Federal law bars the money from being used to pay for abortions.

US–WILDFIRE PREPARATIONS

On the heels of a dry winter, firefighters around the US brace for wildfire risks

SUMMARY: From the southwestern U.S. to Minnesota, Iowa and even parts of New Jersey, it was a dismal winter. Many communities marked record dryness between December and the end of February. Snowpack was nearly nonexistent in some spots, and vegetation was left tinder dry. All comprise ingredients for elevated wildfire risk. More than 1,000 firefighters and fire managers recently participated in an annual wildfire academy in Arizona, where training covered everything from air operations to cutting back brush and building fire lines. Academy officials say there is a consensus that crews will be busy throughout the spring and summer.
