US–SEVERE WEATHER

Storms could unleash deadly floods, strong tornadoes in large part of US in coming days

SUMMARY: Forecasters are warning of potentially deadly flash flooding and strong tornadoes in coming days from a new round of storms. Waves of thunderstorms are poised to strike parts of the Midwest and South later this week. National Weather Service forecasters say the potent system raises the risk of life-threatening flash flooding in parts of the U.S. starting Wednesday. The storms bearing heavy rains are expected in parts of Texas, the lower Mississippi Valley and the Ohio Valley. The new round of storms comes as residents in northern Michigan continue digging out from a weekend ice storm.

US–IMMIGRATION-SCHOLARS DETAINED

ICE says a University of Minnesota student’s visa was revoked for drunken driving, not protests

SUMMARY: Federal officials say a University of Minnesota student was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement because of drunken driving, not student protests. The Department of Homeland Security says the student was arrested after a visa revocation related to the drunken driving arrest. News of the student’s detention and the lack of an official explanation sparked student protests and expressions of concern from university and political leaders. Meanwhile, officials at Minnesota State University Mankato said Monday that one of their students had been detained by ICE as well. ICE did not immediately respond to a request for details on that case.
