US–MEASLES OUTBREAK-EXPLAINER

US sees third measles-related death amid outbreaks

SUMMARY: A third unvaccinated person has died from measles-related causes. The child was school-aged and lived in West Texas, which has nearly 500 cases. The U.S. has more than doubled the total number of measles cases in 2024. Texas, New Mexico, Ohio, Kansas and Oklahoma all have active measles outbreaks. Measles is caused by a highly contagious virus that’s airborne and spreads easily when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs. US–SEVERE WEATHER

Rising rivers threaten US South and Midwest after dayslong torrent of rain

SUMMARY: Rivers rose and flooding worsened across the U.S. South and Midwest, threatening communities already waterlogged and badly damaged by days of heavy rain and wind that killed at least 18 people. From Texas to Ohio on Sunday, utilities scrambled to shut off power and gas, while cities deployed sandbags to protect homes and businesses. US–TAX CUTS-STATES

No state has axed its income tax on wages in 45 years. Now 2 Southern states are on a path to do so

SUMMARY: About 45 years have passed since a state last eliminated its income tax on wages and salaries. Two Southern states are now on a path to do so if their economies keeping growing. Mississippi’s governor has signed a law that could phase out the income tax by 2040 if annual revenue growth benchmarks are met. Kentucky also has tweaked its law to make it easier to meet the revenue triggers needed to keep whittling income tax down toward zero. Both states seek to join the likes of income-tax-free states such as Florida, Tennessee and Texas.
