US–IMMIGRATION-IOWA SHERIFF
Iowa lawsuit says sheriff discouraged compliance with immigration law
SUMMARY: Iowa’s Republican attorney general is suing a county sheriff over his Facebook post saying his department doesn’t always need to detain people at the request of federal immigration authorities. That could jeopardize the county’s state funding. The suit alleges Winneshiek County Sheriff Dan Marx violated Iowa law because his Facebook post discouraged cooperation with federal immigration officers. There has been a renewed push across the country to support President Donald Trump as his administration pursues mass deportations. The Trump administration also has begun taking legal action against governments that have adopted policies inhibiting ICE arrests and deportations.

US–MONSTER UNDER THE BED
Child complains of ‘monster’ under the bed. Babysitter then comes face-to-face with man hiding there
SUMMARY: A Kansas sheriff’s office says a babysitter looked under a bed to reassure a worried child that there wasn’t a monster hiding there — and came face-to-face with a man who wasn’t supposed to be there. The 27-year-old was booked into jail Tuesday after a struggle with the babysitter that knocked the child to the ground. The Barton County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called late Monday to the home near Great Bend. The suspect was gone when they arrived, but they arrested him the next day. The man once lived in the home, but there was a protection from abuse order issued against him to stay away from the property, the sheriff’s office said.

US–AIRCRAFT DOWN
FAA acknowledges it must do better after deadly DC air collision
SUMMARY: The head of the Federal Aviation Administration has told Congress that the agency must do more to ensure flying remains safe after a midair collision over Washington, D.C., that killed 67 people. The FAA’s acting administrator, Chris Rocheleau, said Thursday that the agency’s artificial intelligence-led review aimed at identifying safety threats at other airports with similar helicopter-airplane congestion should be finished in a couple weeks. During the hearing, the head of the National Transportation Safety Board and members of Congress again questioned how the FAA hadn’t noticed an alarming number of close calls near Ronald Reagan National Airport and addressed the problem before the January collision between an Army helicopter and a jetliner.

A former St. Louis police officer is sentenced to probation for shooting at trick-or-treating event
SUMMARY: A former St. Louis County police officer was sentenced Thursday to five years of probation for firing into the air at a trick-or-treating event and shouting that people were going to die. Forty-year-old Matthew McCulloch pleaded guilty in January to six counts of endangering the welfare of a child, one count of making a terroristic threat and one count of unlawful use of a weapon. There was no sentencing recommendation as part of his plea, but several charges were dismissed.

US–FLORIDA-TURTLE RELEASE
19 New England sea turtles are back in the Atlantic Ocean off Florida after rehabbing in Missouri
SUMMARY: Nineteen sea turtles that rehabbed in Missouri after suffering the effects of cold water temperatures in New England are now back in the Atlantic Ocean off of Jacksonville, Florida. The turtles ventured into the water Wednesday afternoon. Their long journey was made possible by the Johnny Morris Sea Turtle Center in Springfield, Missouri, and the non-profit group Turtles Fly Too. Twenty loggerhead and Kemp’s ridley turtles arrived at the Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium in December from Boston’s New England Aquarium. One critically ill turtle died, but the other were given round-the-clock treatment for cold-stunning, which occurs when water temperatures drop quickly.

US–TRUMP-EPA-CLEAN AIR
EPA offers industrial polluters a way to avoid rules on mercury, arsenic and other toxic chemicals
SUMMARY: As part of a push to roll back dozens of environmental regulations, the Trump administration is offering coal-fired power plants and other industrial polluters a chance to receive exemptions from rules requiring them to reduce emissions of toxic chemicals, including mercury, arsenic and benzene. The Environmental Protection Agency has set up an electronic mailbox to allow regulated companies to request a presidential exemption under the Clean Air Act. Companies were asked to send an email by Monday seeking permission from President Donald Trump to bypass the new restrictions. The Clean Air Act enables temporary exemptions if technology required to meet new rules is not widely available and if the continued activity advances national security.
