US–TRUMP-DOGE-AMERICORPS

AmeriCorps members who respond to disasters and help nonprofits are let go in DOGE cuts

SUMMARY: Young volunteers who respond to natural disasters and help with community projects across the U.S. have been discharged. It’s a result of the Trump administration’s campaign to shrink the government’s workforce and services. Members of AmeriCorps’ National Civilian Community Corps were informed Tuesday that they would exit the program early “due to programmatic circumstances beyond your control,” according to an email obtained by The Associated Press. According to the programs website, more than 2,000 people ages 18 to 26 serve for nearly a year and get assigned to projects with nonprofits or the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

FBC–TRANSFER PORTAL-GOLD RUSH

DESCRIPTION: The opening of the college football transfer portal has created a dash for cash. The delay in a judge approving the House v NCAA antitrust settlement has extended the window of there being no limits on the amount of money players can receive from their schools’ NIL collectives or from third-party endorsement deals. The portal opened Wednesday and closes April 25, and the athletes have leverage until the settlement is approved in days or weeks. By College Football Writer Eric Olson. 750 words, photos.

US–NEBRASKA RIVER SEARCH

Nebraska officials search the Missouri River near Omaha for two teens and a child

SUMMARY: Firefighters and police are searching for the bodies of two teenagers and a child who went missing in the frigid waters of Missouri River at Omaha, Nebraska. Omaha Fire Battalion Chief Coby Werner said Wednesday that several sonar-equipped boats, a police helicopter and drones were being used in the search for two 18-year-old women and an 11-year-old girl. The three and another girl went into the water Tuesday evening while fishing from the shore at N.P. Dodge Memorial Park in northeast Omaha. A 13-year-old girl was able to make it to the shore on her own Tuesday evening and was treated for hypothermia at a hospital.

US–CATHOLIC ASSOCIATION WORKERS-LAWSUIT

Judge blocks worker protections for abortion and fertility care for Catholic employers

SUMMARY: More than 9,000 Catholic employers do not need to abide by federal regulations protecting workers who seek abortions and fertility treatments under a ruling issued this week by a federal judge. The Catholic Benefits Association and the Bismarck Diocese sued the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission last year, saying it issued regulations and guidelines that “ran roughshod” over their religious rights. U.S. District Judge Daniel Traynor later put a temporary block on the regulations. On Tuesday he made the block permanent. An attorney for the association and the diocese called the ruling a victory for religious freedom rights.

US–FARGO VOTING BAN

North Dakota governor signs bill doing away with Fargo’s unusual voting system

SUMMARY: North Dakota’s governor has signed a bill to do away with the unusual election method used by his state’s largest city. Republican Gov. Kelly Armstrong on Wednesday signed the bill to prohibit ranked-choice and approval voting. In 2018, Fargo voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot initiative to adopt approval voting, in which voters select as many candidates as they want for mayoral and City Commission races. Before the first approval voting election in 2020, commission candidates won seats with just slivers of the overall vote in crowded races. Three city elections have used approval voting. Former Gov. Doug Burgum vetoed an identical bill in 2023, calling it state overreach and infringement on local control.
