US AIRCRAFT DOWN

DESCRIPTION: A U.S. Senate subcommittee is scheduled to hold a hearing about a preliminary NTSB report a January collision between a passenger jet and an Army helicopter that killed 67 people at an airport near Washington, D.C. The NTSB earlier this month recommended a ban on some helicopter flights at the airport, saying the current setup “poses an intolerable risk.”

Kansas measles cases double to 23 and new Ohio outbreak sickens 10

SUMMARY: A measles outbreak in Kansas more than doubled Wednesday to 23 cases, and an outbreak in Ohio grew to 10. Kansas health officials say there is a possible link to outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico. They expect more cases and are recommending infants 6 to 11 months old get vaccinated early if they live in or near the six-county outbreak area. Texas and New Mexico have more than 370 cases combined. The number of measles cases in the U.S. had already surpassed the case count from all of 2024, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

US — AIRCRAFT DOWN

NTSB chairwoman says reviewing the data after midair crash may prevent the next aviation accident

SUMMARY: The head of the agency investigating the deadly midair collision that killed 67 said Wednesday that someone should have spotted the alarming number of near misses in the skies over the nation’s capital beforehand and reviewing the data now could prevent future crashes. National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy emphasized to Congress Wednesday that the Federal Aviation Administration had data going back to 2011 showing that collision alarms were sounding inside cockpits at least once a month because of how close the planes were getting to helicopters. But she said the agency didn’t act. The FAA is analyzing the data now to determine if there are any similar safety hazards in other cities with heavy helicopter traffic.

US–FORMER LEGISLATOR INDICTED-NORTH-DAKOTA

Ex-North Dakota lawmaker gets 10 years for going to Europe with intent to pay for sex with a minor

SUMMARY: A once-powerful former North Dakota lawmaker has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty last year to traveling to Europe with the intent to pay for sex with a minor. Former state senator Ray Homberg’s attorney, Mark Friese, has confirmed the sentence but declined to comment after the sentencing. Holmberg served in the North Dakota Senate from 1976 to 2022. He resigned in the wake of reporting on his text messages with a man in jail in connection with child sexual abuse material. Federal prosecutors said he exploited vulnerable boys and young men for decades, using his influence as a high school guidance counselor and state lawmaker. KFGO reports Holmberg denied having sex with anyone under 18.

US–SENATOR ARRESTED-MINNESOTA

Minnesota judge says ex-senator arrested in prostitution sting can be released to halfway house

SUMMARY: A former Minnesota state senator charged with trying to solicit a minor for prostitution and accused of attempting to obstruct the FBI’s investigation from jail can be released to a halfway house pending his trial. U.S. Magistrate Judge Shannon Elkins ruled Wednesday that Justin Eichorn does not pose a risk to the community. She found that there are reasonable explanations for actions that federal prosecutors argued warranted keeping him in jail. But she says there is enough evidence to take the case to trial. He did not enter a plea Wednesday.

US–TRUMP-FIRED WORKERS

Federal judge struggles with scope of relief for fired workers

SUMMARY: A federal judge in Maryland says he will extend a temporary order requiring the Trump administration to bring back federal workers who were fired as the president seeks to dramatically downsize the federal workforce. But the judge said Wednesday he was struggling with the scope of a preliminary injunction. U.S. District Judge James Bredar said he had “great reluctance” to issue a sweeping national preliminary injunction in the case, where 19 states and the District of Columbia contend they have been harmed by a large-scale reduction in the federal workforce without warning as required buy law.

US–ROOMMATE KILLING-VERDICT

A jury finds a North Dakota woman not guilty in the 2007 stabbing death of her roommate

SUMMARY: A North Dakota jury has found a woman not guilty of murder in the 2007 stabbing death of her roommate. The jury in the Grand Forks trial deliberated for more than five hours Wednesday before finding Nichole Rice not guilty in the death of 18-year-old Anita Knutson. Rice’s family and friends embraced as the court clerk read the verdict aloud. Rice was in tears as the judge restored order to the courtroom. The now 37-year-old Rice had been charged with a felony murder in the death of Knutson. Knutson was found dead in the apartment she shared with Rice. She was a student at Minot State University.
