US–SENATOR ARRESTED-MINNESOTA

Ex-Minnesota state senator pleads not guilty to attempted enticement of a minor

SUMMARY: A former Minnesota state senator has pleaded not guilty to a federal charge of attempted enticement of a minor. Justin Eichorn entered his plea in a brief court appearance Monday. The judge granted Eichorn’s request for more time, so a trial that was set for June 9 will be rescheduled. The 40-year-old Republican from Grand Rapids was arrested in Bloomington March 17. Eichorn is accused of exchanging text messages with an undercover officer who posed as a 17-year-old girl and arranging a meetup for sex for money. Eichorn resigned March 20. A special election to fill his seat is set for next Tuesday, April 29.

US–TARIFFS-SECONDHAND CLOTHING

Sellers of secondhand clothes prepare for tariffs to give their businesses a boost

SUMMARY: Stores selling secondhand clothing, shoes and accessories are poised to benefit from the Trump administration’s trade war even as global businesses race to avoid potential damage. President Donald Trump’s tariffs are expected to drive up new clothing costs since nearly all shoes and apparel sold in the U.S. are imports. Higher prices may send shoppers to online resale sites and consignment stores in search of deals or to turn wardrobes into cash. Pre-owned items cost less than new merchandise and only would be subject to tariffs if coming from outside the U.S. Popular resale platforms Rebag and Poshmark are preparing for more business with expansion and marketing plans.

US–GOP CANDIDATE-LAWSUIT

A jury found Nebraska’s Republican Party defamed one of its own candidates in 2020

SUMMARY: A jury has found that the Nebraska Republican Party defamed one of its own candidates during an ugly legislative race five years ago and ordered it to pay her $500,000. The jury sided Friday with Janet Palmtag, who sued after the Nebraska GOP sent out campaign mailers in October 2020 attacking her. The mailers highlighted a schism in the party. They falsely claimed Palmtag had been charged with mishandling business trust accounts and had lost her Iowa real estate license. At the time, Palmtag was challenging fellow Republican and then-state Sen. Julie Slama of Peru. Palmtag lost to Slama, an appointee of former Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts. The state party says it’s investigating whether to appeal.
