US–EGG PRICES

DESCRIPTION: Egg prices are expected to decline for the first time this year when the latest numbers are released, offering consumers and bakers alike some relief. The biggest factor behind the expected drop in prices is that no egg farms had an outbreak of bird flu last month and farms that were hit last fall are starting to recover so the egg supply seems to be improving. But even if egg prices do come down after their recent records prices remain much higher than normal. By Josh Funk and Dee-Ann Durbin. Developing from Thursday morning Consumer Price Index report.

US–MIDWEST CARBON PIPELINE-TAKEAWAYS

Takeaways from AP and Lee’s report on a pipeline company’s lawsuits against Midwest farmers

SUMMARY: The company behind a massive proposed carbon pipeline in the Midwestern U.S. filed hundreds of lawsuits against landowners in recent years. An analysis by Lee Enterprises and The Associated Press found that the company, Summit Carbon Solutions, brought 156 eminent domain lawsuits in South Dakota. The legal salvo generated so much outrage among local farmers that South Dakota’s governor signed a bill into law last month that bans the use of eminent domain for building carbon dioxide pipelines, putting the project’s future in doubt. A Summit spokesperson says the company’s priority is voluntary agreements and that the vast majority of easements for the project “have been and continue to be” secured voluntarily.

US–KEYSTONE-PIPELINE-RUPTURE

Cleanup underway of the Keystone oil pipeline spill in North Dakota

SUMMARY: Trucks and workers started a cleanup effort at the site of a spill of the Keystone oil pipeline in rural North Dakota. The cause of the spill and the timing to get the pipeline back online remain unclear. Keystone’s entire system remains shut down after the spill on Tuesday. The pipeline company estimated the spill to amount to around 3,500 barrels, or 147,000 gallons. The spill is contained to an agricultural field. A farmer says he can smell the crude oil when the wind blows from a certain direction. He also says the spill site has been a beehive of activity.

FALLING OIL PRICES

Oil prices fall, then recover, after Trump announces 90-day tariff pause — excluding China

SUMMARY: Oil prices rose to a gain after sinking to a four-year low Wednesday morning in anticipation of slowing economic growth and reduced energy demand, both casualties of a trade war that began after President Donald Trump ordered widespread tariffs against the imports of U.S. trading partners. However, in the afternoon, Trump announced a 90-day pause on most of his tariffs against foreign trading partners, with the exception of China. U.S. benchmark crude followed U.S. markets higher in the afternoon rising 2%, or $1.20, to $60.79 per barrel after Trump announced the tariff pause.
