US–WINTER WEATHER
Arctic air sweeping south over Plains shatters record temperatures in North Dakota
SUMMARY: Arctic air gripping the Plains has broken cold-weather records in North Dakota. The capital city of Bismarck dropped to minus 39 on Tuesday, breaking the record of minus 37 set in 1910 for the same date. And late on Monday, Bismarck sank to minus 35, shattering a 150-year-old record low of minus 35 for Feb. 17. A gradual warmup is expected in coming days. Parts of southwestern and south-central North Dakota are forecasted to hit the 50s on Monday. More than 95 million people are in the deep freeze due to a polar vortex.

US–TRUMP-NATIONAL PARK LAYOFFS
Trump’s firing of 1,000 national park workers raises concerns about maintenance and operating hours
SUMMARY: The Trump administration has fired about 1,000 newly hired National Park Service employees who maintain and clean parks, educate visitors and perform other functions as part of its broad-based effort to downsize government. The firings come amid what has been a chaotic rollout of an aggressive program to eliminate thousands of federal jobs plan led by billionaire Elon Musk. The park service says it is reinstating about 5,000 seasonal jobs that were initially rescinded last month as part of a spending freeze ordered by President Donald Trump. Park advocates say the permanent staff cuts will leave hundreds of national parks understaffed and facing tough decisions about operating hours, public safety and resource protection.

US–EGG PRICES
As egg prices soar, Trump administration plans new strategy to fight bird flu
SUMMARY: With egg prices soaring, the Trump administration is planning a new strategy for fighting bird flu that stresses vaccinations and tighter biosecurity instead of killing off millions of chickens when the disease strikes a flock. The director of the National Economic Council said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that officials are moving away from the standard practice of destroying all the birds on a farm when an infection is detected. The culling of millions of chickens per month has caused egg prices to skyrocket. Some retailers are rationing sales. The official, Kevin Hassett, says the administration plans to announce further details this week.

US–TRANSGENDER HEALTH CARE-KANSAS
Kansas bans gender-affirming care for minors after GOP lawmakers reverse the governor’s veto
SUMMARY: Kansas has become the latest state to ban gender-affirming care for minors. The Republican-controlled Legislature voted Tuesday to override Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto of the measure. The action makes Kansas the 27th state to ban or restrict such care. It comes less than a month after President Donald Trump issued an order barring federal support for gender-affirming care for youth under 19. The new law could take effect by Friday, and critics expect doctors or parents or both to file a state-court lawsuit challenging it. Supporters say they’re protecting vulnerable children from making irreversible medical decisions too early. Critics see the ban as an attack on transgender youth.

CN–TORONTO-DELTA CRASH
Questions emerge about what may have caused Delta plane to burst into flames and flip over
SUMMARY: Aviation experts say investigators will consider the weather conditions, as well as the possibility of human error or an aircraft malfunction as they try to determine why a Delta Air Lines jet burst into flames and flipped upside down as it tried to land in Toronto. The aircraft came down fast Monday, landing so hard that it lost its right wing, then burst into flames. The aircraft slid to a stop, upside down, leaving a trail of black smoke in its wake and passengers scrambling to escape the wreckage. Miraculously, all 80 people on board the flight from Minneapolis to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport survived and all but two of the 21 people injured have been released from hospitals.

CN–TORONTO-DELTA CRASH-THINGS TO KNOW
What to know about the airplane that crashed while landing at Toronto’s airport
SUMMARY: The crash of a passenger jet that flipped while landing in Toronto, Canada, is raising questions about not only cause of the accident but also the safety of flying. The crash was the fourth major aviation accident in North America in the past three weeks. All 80 people on board the Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis that flipped Monday survived. Authorities said Tuesday that two people remain in the hospital while 19 others were treated for relatively minor injuries. Communications between the tower and pilot were normal on approach. Right now, it’s not clear what went wrong.

US–ABORTION-MISSOURI
Abortions resume in Missouri as GOP lawmakers strategize possible repeal
SUMMARY: Abortions are resuming in Missouri. Officials from a Kansas City Planned Parenthood on Tuesday confirmed the first procedure has been performed since the state almost completely outlawed abortion in 2022. Missouri voters in November enshrined reproductive rights in the state constitution. But the amendment left it to judges to decide whether to toss Missouri’s long list of regulations. A Friday ruling at least temporarily struck down remaining laws Planned Parenthood said were blocking abortions from resuming. Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers are doubling down on promises to go back to voters with another amendment limiting or completely banning abortion, with some exceptions.

BKC–OKLAHOMA-FEARS
DESCRIPTION: NORMAN, Okla. — On some nights, Jeremiah Fears looks like a future NBA star. On others, he looks like a true freshman who reclassified and still is figuring things out. Oklahoma’s dynamic point guard didn’t turn 18 until after he arrived on campus. Either way, he’s moving too fast — on the court and up mock draft boards — to dwell on his age. Though he has had rough stretches during Southeastern Conference play, many project him as a lottery pick. Oklahoma coach Porter Moser said Fears has handled the spotlight well and said some mistakes are a given for such an aggressive player. By Cliff Brunt. UPCOMING: 900 words, with photos.

US–LEONARD PELTIER-RELEASE
Leonard Peltier leaves prison after Biden commuted his sentence in the killing of two FBI agents
SUMMARY: Native American activist Leonard Peltier has been released from a Florida prison, weeks after then-President Joe Biden angered law enforcement officials by commuting his life sentence to home confinement in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents. A prison official says the 80-year-old Peltier left the Coleman penitentiary in an SUV on Tuesday. He didn’t stop to speak with reporters or the roughly two dozen supporters who gathered outside the gates to celebrate his release. Peltier, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians in North Dakota, is headed back to his reservation, where family and friends will celebrate his release with him on Wednesday and where he’ll serve his home confinement.
