Israeli airstrikes hit UN school and homes in Gaza
DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip | Hospital officials say Israeli airstrikes across Gaza have killed at least 34 people, including 19 women and children. The strikes hit a U.N. school sheltering displaced Palestinian families as well as two homes. The head of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees says six staffers were among the dead.
The Israeli military says it targeted the school in central Gaza because Hamas militants were planning attacks from there. The claim could not be independently confirmed.
Israel has also carried out new raids in the occupied West Bank, saying it was targeting militant groups.
The war in Gaza is now into its 11th month, with tens of thousands of people dead.
Ohio city lands in unwelcome spotlight
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio | Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has brought attention to an Ohio city by airing false allegations that immigrants are abducting and eating pets. It part of a timeworn political tradition to cast immigrants as outsiders whose strange behavior is a shock to American culture.
Trump is amplifying earlier claims about Springfield’s Haitian immigrants made by his running mate, JD Vance. Officials in the town of about 60,000 people say there have been no credible or detailed reports about the allegations. Some Haitian immigrants in Springfield say the lies have made them fearful about rising divisiveness in the predominantly white, blue-collar city.
