Former Milwaukee hotel workers charged with murder

MADISON, Wis. | Prosecutors in Milwaukee have charged four former hotel workers with being a party to D’Vontaye Mitchell’s murder after a bystander’s video showed them piling on the Black man as they tried to remove him from the lobby.

According to a criminal complaint, Mitchell ran into the Hyatt Hotel on June 30 and entered a woman’s bathroom. An employee dragged him outside and with the three others held him down on his stomach for eight or nine minutes while Mitchel gasped for breath.

His family’s attorneys have likened his death to the murder of George Floyd, a Black man who died in 2020 after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee on his neck for about nine minutes.

Texas man who claimed intellectual disability executed

HUNTSVILLE, Texas | Texas has executed a man for the killing of a woman out jogging near her Houston home more than 27 years ago.

Fifty-four-year-old Arthur Lee Burton received a lethal injection Wednesday evening at the state penitentiary in Huntsville. He was convicted of the July 1997 murder of 48-year-old mother of three Nancy Adleman.

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected Burton’s late request for a stay of execution over arguments he was intellectually disabled. His lawyers cited a 2002 Supreme Court ruling prohibiting the execution of intellectually disabled people. But prosecutors said Burton’s intelligence was above average and he waited just days before his scheduled execution to raise that claim.
