Demonstrators arrested at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. | Stanford University says 13 people have been arrested when law enforcement removed pro-Palestinian demonstrators who occupied a building that houses the university president and provost offices. The school said there was damage inside and outside the building, and an officer was lightly injured.

The takeover occurred around sunrise Wednesday. Within about three hours officers had broken into the building and began making arrests. The Stanford Daily, a student newspaper, says one of its reporters is among those taken into custody. More than 3,130 people have been arrested on the campuses of 65 colleges and universities across the U.S.

U.S. flies B-1B bomber for first precision bomb drill in seven years

SEOUL, South Korea | The United States flew a long-range B-1B bomber over the Korean Peninsula on Wednesday for its first precision-guided bombing drill with South Korea in seven years, the South’s military said.

The drill — seen as a show of force against North Korea — comes as tensions are rising over the North’s recent launches of rubbish-carrying balloons toward South Korea and other provocations.

Wednesday’s training involved other advanced U.S. and South Korean fighter jets as well as the B-1B aircraft, the second U.S. bomber temporarily deployed over the Korean Peninsula this year. The exercise was meant to demonstrate the U.S. security commitment to South Korea and strengthen the allies’ joint defense posture, according to the South Korean Defense Ministry.

Israeli nationalists march in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM | Thousands of ultranationalist Israelis have marched through a sensitive Palestinian area of Jerusalem in an annual procession, chanting racist slogans. Also on Wednesday, the country’s far-right national security minister boasted that Jews had prayed at a key holy site in the city in violation of longstanding agreements. Both stoke regional tensions that are already high because of the war in Gaza.

The march has in previous years ignited widespread tensions, as it did three years ago, when it helped set off an 11-day war in Gaza. The annual march commemorates “Jerusalem Day,” which marks Israel’s capture of east Jerusalem, including the Old City and its holy sites sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, in the 1967 Mideast war.

Amanda Knox reconvicted of slander in Italy

FLORENCE, Italy | An Italian court has reconvicted Amanda Knox of slander, quashing her hope of removing a legal stain against her that has persisted after her exoneration in the brutal 2007 murder of her British roommate.

The court found that Knox had wrongly accused an innocent man, the Congolese owner of the bar where she worked part time, of the killing. But she will not serve any more jail time. The three-year sentence counts as time already served.

Knox showed no visible emotion as the verdict was read aloud. Her lawyers say she is “embittered” and plans to appeal to Italy’s highest court.
