Florida deputy announced himself prior
to shooting
FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. | Police body camera video shows a Florida sheriff’s deputy announced himself as law enforcement just before fatally shooting a Black U.S. Air Force airman in his apartment. Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden showed police body camera video of the May 3 shooting at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
Earlier, the family of Senior Airman Roger Fortson and their attorneys said they wanted to clear his name and disputed that the deputy acted in self-defense.
The video shows Fortson had a gun that was pointed downward. Noted civil rights attorney Ben Crump is representing Fortson’s family. He says the gun as legally registered and that the Constitution gave Fortson the right to own it and against unreasonable searches by police.
Biden will seek partial end to special court oversight of child migrants
SAN DIEGO | The Biden administration plans to partially end the 27-year-old court supervision of how the federal government cares for child migrants, shortly after producing its own list of safeguards against mistreatment.
Opposing attorney Leecia Welch says the Justice Department has said it will ask a federal judge to terminate what is known as the Flores agreement at the U.S. Health and Human Services Department.
The move could strain President Joe Biden’s already rocky relationship with immigration advocates as he confronts an unprecedented surge in border crossings, with arrests topping 2 million in each of the last two budget years.
