Politicians, dog experts vilify South Dakota governor
Politicians and dog experts are criticizing South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem after she wrote in a new book about killing a rambunctious puppy. The story and the vilification she received on social media has some observers wondering if she’s still a viable potential running mate for Donald Trump.
Noem has tried to reframe the story from two decades ago as an example of her willingness to make tough decisions. She says the 14-month-old dog showed aggressive behavior by biting. Experts who work with hunting dogs like Noem’s said she should have trained the pup, not killed it, or found it a new home.
Officers killed in N. Carolina were at disadvantage
CHARLOTTE, N.C. | Police in North Carolina say they’re still sorting out how four officers were killed and four others wounded Monday in Charlotte. But they know the officers were at a disadvantage when immediately faced with gunfire from an upstairs position inside a home.
A task force made up of state, federal and local officers were trying to arrest a man for a gun crime. That man, Terry Clark Hughes Jr., also died. Mayor Vi Lyles says Charlotte won’t be the last place that police are killed, but that Charlotte will be a place that “will heal with dignity and respect.”
Metro train collides with bus in downtown
Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES | Officials say 55 people were hurt, two seriously, when a Metro light rail train and a University of Southern California shuttle bus collided in downtown Los Angeles.
The LA Fire Department says the crash happened shortly before noon Tuesday along Exposition Boulevard, near the USC campus and the Natural History Museum. Two victims were hospitalized with serious injuries and 16 others were transported in fair condition, the department says. Another 37 people were treated at the scene.
Dave Sotero, a spokesperson for LA Metro, says the bus crossed into the path of a Metro E Line train. Los Angeles police will investigate.
