Strike at the Eiffel Tower closes popular monument

to visitors

PARIS | Visitors to the Eiffel Tower are being turned away because of a strike over poor financial management at one of the world’s most-visited sites. Visits to the hugely popular landmark in central Paris have soared in the lead-up to the Summer Olympics in the French capital.

But tourists planning to visit the Eiffel Tower on Monday were warned of disruptions in multiple languages on its website. Visitors were advised to check the website before heading to the monument or to postpone their trip.

In December, the Eiffel Tower was closed to visitors for an entire day during Christmas and New Year’s holidays because of a strike over contract negotiations.

Wisconsin’s Democratic governor signs his new legislative maps into law

MADISON, Wis. | Wisconsin’s Democratic governor, Tony Evers, has signed new legislative district maps into law that he proposed and that the Republicans who control the Legislature passed to avoid having the liberal-leaning state Supreme Court draw the lines.

Democrats are hailing it as a major political victory in the swing state where the Legislature has been firmly under Republican control for more than a decade, even as Democrats have won 14 of the past 17 statewide elections.

Democrats are almost certain to gain seats in the state Assembly and state Senate under the new maps, which will be in place for the November election.

Waffle House shooting in Indianapolis leaves one dead, five injured

INDIANAPOLIS | A woman has been killed and five other people were wounded in a shooting at a Waffle House restaurant in Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says officers responded to a report of a shooting at the restaurant around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

Police found five shooting victims who were taken to a hospital, including a woman who was in critical condition and died. The other victims, a woman and three men, all are in stable condition. Police say a sixth man traveled separately to a hospital with a gunshot wound and is in critical condition.

Investigators believe an argument between two groups at the restaurant escalated to gunfire. No one has been arrested.
