The organization UNAIDS reports that HIV infections have been reduced by 60 percent since they peaked in 1995. In 1995, 3.3 million people were newly infected with HIV, a figure that dropped to 1.3 million in 2023. That significant drop can be credited to a number of variables, not the least of which is education and the tireless work of researchers who have worked for decades to gain a greater understanding of HIV.

Increased access to treatment has also helped to turn the tides of HIV.

Though treatments like antiretroviral therapy are only for people who have been diagnosed with HIV, access to those treatments has improved dramatically since 2010. UNAIDS reports that 30.7 million people had access to antiretroviral therapy by the end of 2023, which was a marked improvement compared to 2010, when just 7.7 million individuals could access such treatments.
