The lifetime risk of developing pancreatic cancer is about one in 56 for men and roughly one in 60 among women, says the American Cancer Society. The ACS estimates about 66,440 people were expected to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2024. The Canadian Cancer Society reports that 7,100 Canadians would be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2024, with roughly the same amount of men and women being diagnosed with the disease. The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network says pancreatic cancer is defined as a “rare” cancer, or one occurring in fewer than 15 out of 100,000 people. Despite the low incidence rates, pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death because it often is diagnosed late and there is no established early detection method.
