Data from the World Health Organization indicates that nearly three in four children between the ages of two and four regularly suffer physical punishment and/or psychological violence at the hands of parents and caregivers. The WHO also reports that one in five women and one in 13 men report having been sexually abused as a child.

Data from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services indicates that abuse of children under the age of one is especially prevalent, with approximately 94,000 cases of such abuse reported in 2020.

Child abuse also poses a significant problem in Canada, where results from the Survey of Safety in Public and Private Spaces found that 27% of Canadians have experienced at least one instance of physical or sexual abuse by an adult prior to their fifteenth birthday.
