Statement by Jacob McMillian
Two questions were sent to Jacob McMillian regarding the Families for a Strong St. Joseph PAC. These are his complete responses, which are quoted in a related article.
Q. To what extent is it appropriate or inappropriate for the Families PAC to continue to associate your campaign with opposition to the Bond Issue?
McMillian: Despite our differences concerning the bond, I am thankful that the Families PAC resonates with my positions of academic success, parental rights, safe and disciplined classrooms, and a five-day school week. The endorsement of the Families PAC is no different than any other endorsement. For example, the two teacher associations (MSTA and NEA) have endorsed candidates. Does an endorsement from the teacher associations mean that those candidates agree on everything with the teacher associations? Should we assume those endorsements mean that those candidates support a 4-day school week? No, the only assumption that can be made about endorsements is that the endorsing group wants that candidate to win. The Families PAC has a right to endorse candidates and oppose the bond as long as they follow the Missouri Ethics Commission’s guidelines.
Q. What do you believe about the transparency such groups should be required to provide on the money they’re spending, and its source?
McMillian: The Missouri Ethics Commission’s guidelines ensure a level playing field for all candidates and committees. As long as these guidelines are followed, no group, including the Families PAC, can be considered in the wrong. This adherence to the rules ensures the integrity of our political process.
